How can I apply a matte finish to polished stone beads?

I am working with stone beads, jasper, onyx, and they have a high polish... but I am wanting more of a matte surface. I'm wondering if there is any way to apply this type of a finish to them? Perhaps a rock-tumbler with a more coarse polishing medium?

  1. AN-DY Says:

You could try emery paper – get 800 or 1200 grit to take the high polish off but still have a smooth but matte surface.
If you have access to a tumbler, try to buy grit blasting material of a grade that is shot through a small air polisher / grit blaster. The stuff is usually aluminium oxide and should be suitable.

    Cheers
