Where can you get these little beads or balls that you put into water and they will grow like double their size, in the UK they can be used for plants as well?

I have some but miine dont seem to be growing that much? Do I have to put it into hot/cold water at room temperature or something, doesnt even say on the stupid packet which my freind got me?
