What products can I use to coat paper beads for reinforcement?
meaganjl asked:
I have been folding paper, and i want to make paper beads. Is there a product I can use to coat the beads so that they don't get crushed when they are worn?

Spray on varnish should help.

Clear nail polish or pva glue would work.

Varnish and clear nail polish have toxic fumes and should only be used in well-ventilated areas.
I’ve routinely used diluted Elmer’s glue (white, not the yellow for wood, regular, not the washable school glue) on rolled paper beads for decades. It’s held up just fine.
I’ve never bother to coat any of my origami beads … might be a good idea! I’ve just used them as part of tassels on kusudama and similar, where they’ve not been subject to actual wear/abrasion.

I have used regular Elmer’s glue to hold the paper together and then when dry, I coated them with clear nail polish to seal it up and give them some shine.

I would use liquid lacquer. it comes in a plastic bottle and is used to coat paper crafts to make them shinny and hard. It’s found in stamping stores and some scrapbook stores, Walmart may also carry it. Once its applied in thin coats and drys over night it will be just like a wooden or glass bead in texture. I also know you can use Modge Podge, I think that’s spelled right. To use this product you soak your paper in it before you roll your bead and once dry you can add another coat or 2 to smooth it out. I prefer the lacquer myself.
Good luck
