What’s the significance of giving your old prayer beads to a sick person who is not of the same religion?

beads
Rhiannon asked:

My mother, before she passed away, was given someone's prayer beads and they were kept next to her bed. I forget what religion it is that keeps prayer beads but can anyone tell me if there is a specific significance to giving someone your rosary or if it was just a nice gesture?
JP; Seriously? That doesn't believable to me. My mother was a Non-denominational Christian. These two women had basically the same ideals about God and the afterlife. I also don't think that you could persuade someone to be part of religion just by giving them prayer beads. lol
woops, typos. I meant, that doesn't sound believable and you could NOT persuade someone.
Okay, forget that last part, I misread the sentence.

It’s really just a nice gesture. Catholics pray the rosary, so the beads have been gone over many times by hands while the heart is in prayer. Also, many rosaries have been blessed.

well in Islam we have something called a tasbih and we use that keep count how many times we say each verse in prayer. a tasbih is considered powerful bc many spiritual people use it in prayer making very spritual and powerful. i dont know how to explainn it but it’s like keeping evil powers away and spritually powerful for a soul. i hope i helped.
    cya!

I wouldn’t worry about it…. if it gave your mum strength, then great…. it won’t have changed her beliefs, and personally think it was a nice gesture. One person reaching out to another and showing humanity, rather than attempting a convertion.

A symbol of affection, and prayer. Prayer ropes can become very personal items when used over a long period of time, giving it to someone is loving.

Roman Catholics have rosaries and if people confess wrongdoing the priest tells them to do so many Hail Mary prayers etc, I have heard.

I am definitely not a Catholic and I believe in the inspired word of God in the Bible. In there we are told not to be repetitious in our prayers but to be sincere. The Pharisees were known for there long, showy prayers and Jesus condemned them for wanting to be seen of men and hypocrites.

It is an expression of faith for both people, the one giving their cherished possession and the one accepting it. The giver wants to do everything in their power for comfort and healing, and I think it’s an incredibly touching gift and gesture. I do not belong to the religion that keeps prayer beads (Catholic) but if I had a Catholic friend who saw my trials and challenges, and thought to give those to me, I would feel honored and humbled that they were giving up something so meaningful to them to try and help me.
